EMBL Hamburg is seeking a highly motivated scientist to join the small-angle X-ray scattering team.

The EMBL Hamburg Unit is located on the DESY research campus and pursues research in structural biology and the development of instrumentation and computational methodology for small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and macromolecular crystallography (MX). EMBL Hamburg is running one SAXS beamline and two MX beamlines on the high-brilliance synchrotron radiation source PETRA III. The beamlines are complemented by laboratories for biophysical sample characterization and preparation and computational facilities for data evaluation. EMBL is heavily engaged in the preparations for a next-generation synchrotron, PETRA IV, in Hamburg.  

Your role

The successful candidate will play a major role in the maintenance and development of the beamline facilities, the support of external users, and in collaborative projects. These activities will include the management of projects and people. There will be opportunities for technology developments for biological SAXS and/or research projects, ideally linked with the operation of the beamline and in collaboration with groups inside and outside of EMBL. The post holder will play an active role in the development of the EMBL activities at PETRA IV  

You have

  • PhD in a relevant field Excellent knowledge of biological SAXS techniques
  • Previous experience in maintenance and development of hardware and/or software for synchrotron radiation beamlines.
  • Experience in work at a large scale user-oriented facility
  • Experience in project management
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to supervise and collaborate in an international team environment

You might also have

  • Significant scientific accomplishments and expertise in structure analysis of biological macromolecules using SAXS.
  • Experience in time-resolved studies with synchrotron radiation.
