Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations worldwide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), Rome (Italy).

EMBL operates an integrated research infrastructure in structural biology at the PETRA-III ring at DESY Hamburg, offered to the international research community. It includes three beamlines for applications in X-ray crystallography and small angle X-ray scattering. The Sample Preparation & Characterization (SPC) facility supports external researchers carrying out experiments on these beamlines and hosts a variety of instruments and techniques, including a high-throughput crystallization platform and biophysical characterization laboratory. An extension of the SPC activities is hosted in the new Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB). The EMBL SPC facility has a strong track record in the development and implementation of new technologies and approaches.

The Scientific Officer – Biophysical Characterization will support users with the design, execution and data analysis of biophysical experiments. She/he will use cutting-edge technologies to measure interactions and to precisely determine the stability, shape and size of different biomolecules and biomolecular assemblies identifying the most suitable biophysical techniques to answer the biological questions the researchers are trying to tackle. The facility currently covers a broad range of biophysical techniques, including calorimetry, mass spectroscopy, circular dichroism, fluorescence, microscale thermophoresis, dynamic/static light scattering, infrared spectroscopy, surface plasmon resonance and biolayer Interferometry. He/She will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of biophysical instruments as well as for training users to operate the equipment independently. The postholder will have an opportunity to develop own relevant research activities within the framework of the group by Maria Garcia Alai related to the development of new methods at the SPC.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates should hold a PhD with at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience and should also be able to demonstrate their expertise in the fields of biophysics and biochemistry. A thorough knowledge and hands-on experience with the relevant standard biophysical techniques, handling challenging biological samples and performing data analysis is required. Project management experience, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, teamwork and enthusiasm for working in an ambitious, multicultural, scientific environment are expected. Fluency in English is required.
