The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations worldwide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK) and Rome (Italy).
EMBL is operating an Integrated Facility for Structural Biology at the PETRA III synchrotron radiation source at DESY, Hamburg. The core of the facility is formed by three X-ray beamlines that provide state-of-the-art conditions for X-ray crystallography and small-angle X-ray scattering experiments and a protein crystallisation facility. The facilities are open to the international scientific community and hundreds of users visit them every year.
The postholder is expected to participate in the construction, manufacturing, installation and maintenance of synchrotron beamline instrumentation and experimental facilities. Tasks will range from technical drawing and machining to the assembly and testing of precision mechanics. She/he will work in an international team of technicians, engineers and scientists and will support user operation at the beamlines.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have a certified apprenticeship or an equivalent engineering degree in precision mechanics or a related discipline. The postholder should have demonstrated experience with CNC machine tools and in working with 3D CAD software like Solid Edge or comparable and ideally also with CAM packages like Mastercam. Experience in the following fields is a plus: 3D printing, work with vacuum equipment and/or cryogenic equipment. The candidate must have very good communication skills to collaborate in an international and multidisciplinary team. The working language is English.
