The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), Rome (Italy) and Barcelona (Spain).
The Rompani group is looking for a Research Technician who will participate in neuroscience research as part of an interdisciplinary team of young scientists working within a highly collaborative international environment. The Rompani group uses a combination of in vivo imaging, mouse genetics, and virology to study how vision is influenced by other sensory systems and internal states. The person appointed to this position will conduct at least one of the following major tasks, depending on their interests and qualifications:
(a) Dry lab tasks: they will be in charge of quantitative data analysis, software development, and computational modelling.
(b) Microscopy tasks: they will build and troubleshoot devices for performing in vivo calcium imaging and optogenetics combined with complex sensory stimulation.
(c) Wet lab tasks: they will directly take part in experimental projects, such as molecular tool construction, viral tracing of neuronal circuits, neurophysiological data collection, and performing behavioural tests.
In addition to the above tasks, an essential aspect of this position is having a key role in general laboratory organization, the maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment, and providing general support for group members throughout their scientific projects.
Qualifications and ExperienceA Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a scientific discipline is required. Strong interest in neuroscience research, and experience and expertise in at least one of the following categories corresponding to the major tasks above are essential: (a) dry lab skills such as computer programming and statistics, (b) microscopy skills such as use or construction of a two-photon microscope, and (c) wet lab skills such as molecular biology, electrophysiology, and behavioral testing. Knowledge of Italian would be advantageous.
