Grenoble, 26 September 2019 EMBL and Tara: Marseille The scientific crew aboard the Tara research vessel are continuing their mission to explore the origins of microplastic waste and its transfer from river to sea. For the past few months, they have been collecting samples from some of Europe’s major rivers, in a voyage that has taken them around the coastlines of the UK, Germany, Spain, Portugal, France and Italy. From 27–30 September, Tara will be docked in the port of France’s second largest city, close to the mouth of the Rhône. The same weekend, EMBL alumni and friends from France and beyond will converge on Marseille to attend the EMBL in France event.
Rome, 12 September 2019 EMBL and Tara: Rome Tara’s next stopover, from 12–14 September, will take place a few miles downriver from Rome. It will be accompanied by various events, including a scientific conference about the environment and life, named ‘On the waves of science’, and a press conference with speakers from EMBL Rome and Tara. There will also be outreach activities, such as group visits on board Tara, an opportunity to build a fluorescence microscope, and stalls with games and science-related activities.
Hamburg, Heidelberg, General, 2 August 2019 We all come from the ocean While he was the head of EMBL’s Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit, Eric Karsenti read Darwin’s book The Voyage of the Beagle, and was fascinated by the story it told. Karsenti, a passionate sailor, dreamed of a sailing boat going around the world and popularising topics such as evolution, cell biology and the work of EMBL. But first, there were some obstacles to overcome.
Hamburg, 21 June 2019 EMBL joins Tara stopovers in London and Hamburg EMBL joined Tara at its first stopovers for Mission Microplastics in London (11–13 June) and Hamburg (16–19 June). In London, EMBL Director General Edith Heard and Director of EMBL-EBI Ewan Birney joined a reception on board, together with UK policymakers and funders. In Hamburg, EMBL staff and their families boarded Tara for a tour of the ship. Journalists, the French ambassador to Germany Anne-Marie Descôtes, and the French consul in Hamburg Laurent Toulouse came aboard for a joint EMBL–Tara press conference.
