Malaria remains one of the most significant global public health challenges, with more than 300 million clinical cases world-wide each year. The lack of an effective licensed vaccine and the continual emergence of drug-resistant malaria parasites make the search for new control and prevention strategies more important than ever. Malaria research is a highly collaborative field that thrives on the sharing of unique resources, technologies and biological advances. The open and early sharing of the these and establishment of new collaborations is critical if those advances are to be translated into public health impact.
This conference will address fundamental questions of the biology of the malaria parasite, its vector, the (immune) response of the host and the disease that it causes, and will showcase the latest technological approaches. This will be the 12th BioMalPar conference at EMBL Heidelberg. The conference series has built on the success of the EU funded Networks of Excellence, EviMalaR and BioMalPar, and has for the last decade brought together malaria researchers from across Europe with their colleagues and collaborators from around the world, to present and share recent groundbreaking findings on fundamental malaria research in an integrated and highly collaborative environment.
There are two major objectives for the conference. The first is to offer an opportunity for sharing ideas and for the development of new worldwide collaborations. The second objective is to serve as a training opportunity for the next generation of malaria researchers, as well as scientists from malaria endemic countries. Speaking sessions will focus on offering speaking opportunities for early stage researchers, and the meeting structure includes multiple parallel “meet the investigator” discussion panels as well as session focusing on non-academic careers in malaria and beyond. We hope that the meeting will inspire the next generation of malaria scientists, and deepen the fruitful collaborative links between the broader research community.
Scientific presentations will be related to the following four main themes:
• Immunobiology and pathophysiology
• Parasite molecular and cell biology
• Vector parasite interactions
• Computational and Systems Biology
In keeping with the traditions of BioMalPar and EviMalaR, with their emphasis on training and networking, the meeting will focus on allowing plenty of speaking opportunities for early stage researchers. Interactions with international leaders will be encouraged through three dynamic poster sessions and numerous networking opportunities, to foster the development of new collaborations worldwide.
