EMBL Courses and Conferences during the Coronavirus pandemic

With the onsite programme paused, many of our events are now being offered in virtual formats.

Registration is open as usual for many events, with back-up plans in place to move further courses and conferences online as necessary. Registration fees for any events affected by the COVID-19 disruption are fully refundable.

Course Overview
The Synthetic Biology (SynBio) field has boomed in the last year, making it virtually impossible to cover every aspect of the field in one practical course. This course will focus on exploiting tools and concepts of SynBio for multi-scale engineering of bacterial systems.

The course will foster methodological interfaces between molecular biologists, physicists and engineers in order to design bacterial systems with new-to-nature properties. The programme includes a series of lectures by top experts in the field and an intensive experimental schedule for one week. By focusing on bacteria, students will be exposed to the basics of SynBio while exploring its applications in a specific and booming area of contemporary Science.


The program consists of practicals with two daily lectures on some of the hottest topics in Bacterial SynBio, including [i] Advanced genetic tools for genome engineering (incl CRISPR and MAGE) [ii] Multiple assembly/synthesis/editing of DNA segments for constructing biosensing and biocatalytic devices [iii] Computer-assisted design of genetic circuits [iv] Engineering synthetic morphologies and [v] Directed self-organization of multi-strain communities. All students will engage in the corresponding activities. The practicals will focus on bacteria, while the lectures will encompass a suite of topics in contemporary Synthetic Biology.


Learning Outcomes

The participants will learn about the design and workflow of Synthetic Biology studies and gain understanding about the possibilities and limitations of Synthetic Biology in different areas.


The course is mostly directed to PhD students and post-doctoral researchers active in the areas of Molecular Microbiology, Bacterial Biotechnology, Systems Biology and Bioengineering.
