EMBL Courses and Conferences during the Coronavirus pandemic
With the onsite programme paused, many of our events are now being offered in virtual formats.
Registration is open as usual for many events, with back-up plans in place to move further courses and conferences online as necessary. Registration fees for any events affected by the COVID-19 disruption are fully refundable.

A limited amount of financial assistance for participants who submit an abstract for this meeting is being made available by the following funders:
• The EMBL Advanced Training Centre Corporate Partnership Programme
• The International BioIron Society
• Conference sponsors and supporters: Vifor Pharma, ApoPharma, DRG Instruments and P&G Health
Participants who need financial support to attend can apply for help in the form of registration fee waivers and / or travel grants. Details on how to apply will be given during the abstract submission process. By applying you will automatically be considered for all of the participating funds, although they have differing eligibility criteria.
Please note that your place at the meeting is only confirmed by paying the registration fee. This is mandatory even when receiving a fee waiver.
Registration Fee Waivers cover the full registration sum that you have paid to attend the meeting. Reimbursement is paid to your bank account after the conference.
Travel grants contribute to the cost of travel to Heidelberg (airfares, train, bus, taxi, accommodation and visa) and are awarded with a specified cap, usually as follows:
- up to €400 for participants travelling to the EMBL Conference from within Europe.
- up to €1000 for participants travelling to the EMBL Conference from outside Europe.
These caps are subject to reduction at the organiser’s discretion to accommodate more participants. Recipients will be notified of their travel cap amount when they are informed of the outcome of their application. You will need to arrange and pay for your own travel in advance. Original receipts must then be provided with your signature for all costs incurred, within two months of completion of travel. Scanned copies cannot be accepted. Reimbursement will then be made by EMBL to your bank account up to the stated cap.
You may apply for financial assistance when submitting your abstract for the meeting. In your application you will be asked to answer questions regarding your motivation for applying, reasons why your lab cannot fund your attendance and how your attendance will make a difference to your career. You will also be asked for information relating to your career stage and dates of your qualifications to check eligibility for the different funds. Applying for financial support will not affect the outcome of your registration application or your selection to speak or present a poster if you have made one.
The Scientific Committee will select the recipients of all financial assistance during the abstract selection process. Results will be announced approximately 6-8 weeks before the event start date, however for some events this may be delayed. Selection results do not impact your admission to the meeting. Selection is based on your current work or study location and career stage, your motivation for applying, the reasons for needing financial support and the impact this event will have on your career.
Costs will be reimbursed after the meeting only once a reimbursement form and original receipts (from travel costs) have been received.

Participants coming from the following countries will be given priority for travel grants: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Ukraine and Turkey. Africa, South and Central America and Asia (excluding China, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea).
International BioIron Society
IBIS financial assistance is restricted to PhD students and postdocs who have completed their PhD no longer than 5 years ago. In addition, applicants for this financial assistance need to hold IBIS membership status.
